to Aunt Janis about the 6 things he loves the most about her, for her 60th birthday [60 things would be too many]:

You bring me presents

Because you say bad words

"Tell me the egg story,"

Julia asked, so I told her about why raw eggs can be dangerous.  She said, “That’s why ‘some vanilla’ is dangerous…not like the ice cream.”

when the teacher handed out rings with ribbons and asked “Who knows what we can do with the streamers?”

Julia offered, “Take them home?”

Shortly thereafter, the teacher asked,

“Julia, what’s your favorite animal?”

The enthusiastic reply, “Pink!”

Julia woke up

January 21st, 2004 No comments

at the crack of dawn and watched an episode of “Lilo and Stitch.” Evan woke up and joined her just as “Madeleine” started, and when that ended and it was Evan’s turn to pick a show, he made a point of telling Julia he wanted her to stay through his show (instead of getting up, which she often does as she gets restless after a couple of programs) because he “wanted company.”

as we were climbing the stairs, Julia was explaining to me that she no longer had a crib. She said, “My crib is gone. It died. Ms. Sylvia made my bed for me.”

Hide and seek

November 24th, 2003 No comments

Evan, Julia & I were playing hide and seek yesterday. We took turns: first they’d hide, then I would. And everytime they hid, they would hide together. About ten minutes into the game, as I uncovered my ears when I finished counting, I heard Julia crying. She explained to me that Evan wouldn’t let her hide with him. So we went together to where Evan was hiding: the walk-in cupboard next to the stairs to the basement. At first I thought she wouldn’t fit in, but then Evan moved over enough to accommodate them both. So, as is logical, I went to go count again while they &#147hid.&#148 Evan reminded me to &#145forget where we’re hiding.&#146

So I went into the den, counted, and came back. But instead of opening the cupboard door and &#145finding&#146 them, I stepped onto the stairway to the basement and reached around, turning the cupboard doorknob, flinging the door open, and retrieving my arm. The kids looked out to see…no one. To my surprise, they pulled the door shut again. Ok, so this is a neat game. I flung the door open again. This time, they did the same thing…instead of looking for me, they shut the door again. Anyway, this continued another couple of times, then finally, I went over to the door, pulled it open and &#145BOO!&#146 Evan by then was so focused on grabbing the doorknob and pulling the door closed that he was totally taken by surprise. He was so startled he metaphorically hit the ceiling. It was so funny I couldn’t help but laugh. He got annoyed at this but was a good sport about it. 🙂

&#147How’s that?&#148

&#147First there’s a D, then there’s a W&#148

Julia’s turn (looking at my shoulder): &#147Daddy, where’s your bookmark?&#148

…oh, you mean my birthmark?&#148

I thought I’d try reading to Evan from “The Hobbit” instead of from a picture book…

It took only five minutes for the snoring to start. Tolkien was verbose, I’ll admit.

Julia...ready for the runway?
I put the pink dress on her; she did the rest. I hope her fashion sense evolves beyond mine.
